Question by Jo: Are these practical skills things that you’d want your kids to learn? What would you…?
Add to or delete from this list? Can your kid do these things yet? Can YOU do them?
I’m kind of a nerd for practical skills…the more I know/the more I can do, the better I feel, so I’m always trying to find useful things I don’t know how to do yet and learn them. My kids are still tiny, but as they grow I’m going to try and pass down much of this knowledge to them. Anyway, I stumbled upon this list that someone on this site had made of things he wants his son to learn how to do. I’m interested to see what other people think, and what changes you personally would make. Thanks!

The list:
“Driving (including manual tranmission).
At least basic car maintenance – pumping gas (not really maintenance, but still very necessary to know), checking and changing the various fluids, changing a tire (which would include using a jack), using jumper cables, etc.
Cooking
Putting together a resume, knowing the proper etiquette for a job interview
How to back up a hard drive
How to do all manner of household-y things – laundry (which includes ironing), doing the dishes, cleaning the entire house, etc.
A minimum amount of sewing – he doesn’t need to be able to embroider or make his own clothes (I sure as hell can’t), but if a button falls off his shirt he should be able to sew it back on.
CPR and first aid
Tying a tie
How to use all sorts of tools properly
Build a fire
Have a basic understanding of the political and legal systems
How to use public transit”

Those are all good and I wouldn’t delete anything from the list. There are things I would add, though – I’ll have to think about them and get back.

There is a list that Popular Mechanics made a while back that you might like – “things every man should know how to do” or something like that. I’ll see if I can find it for you.

I know how to do all of those things except for backing up a hard drive, which I really don’t consider to important as I feel like life skills shouldn’t be based around a computer. Yes, computers are fun and entertaining, but if I lost my computer right now it would not be a big deal at all.

I do know how to do all of those things, and for the most part, I was taught them by my parents. I do think they are important to know, and I like the list!

Great list! He should also know how to take care of himself medically (make appts. w/dentists and doctors), monitor his exercise and diet and check for diseases.

He should also know geography. I’m amazed how many kids can’t read a map or tell directions! That’s really important when driving, and traveling in general.

Fire safety is important. Teach him the drill of what to do in that event, or a natural disaster. (You could add those to CPR, along with swimming lessons).

DEFINITELY teach him his legal and constitutional rights! SO many people just cave in when someone tells them they have to be searched or let someone like a cop search their car. No, they DON’T. There’s a great video on YouTube called “What to do if you get pulled over while driving.” It involves a lot of what NOT to say or do.

I don’t see any discussion about sex, drugs or relationships in there. EVERY Parent must have those talks w/their kids, to keep them well-informed and safe. It’s not fun, but necessary. If you don’t know about contraceptive methods or STD’s (as they enter puberty–it’s never too early!), take a class or get a video. When they’re young, teach them about “stranger-danger” and “good-touch/bad-touch”, to prevent abuse or abduction, an all-too-real fact of life, sadly. Never think “It can’t happen to MY kid”!

Also, teach or have someone teach your kid basic bully-proofing and self-defense. This doesn’t have to be a long martial-arts training. You can learn to defend yourself with a few basic moves and awareness of your surroundings. Many martial arts schools teach these basics, or places like the Y.

    There’s so much more!

That family is family, when we are gone we do not know where life will take you. Take care of and love your siblings. They may be the only friends you have.
That we COULD have done a lot better at teaching money management skills

Swimming is one I would definitely add – we should all know how to swim. VERY important in my mind! Treading water is something to include with this.

Basic logical thinking – as to not get duped by people talking them into things. Just teach them to evaluate what they’re told. I know it’s not a hands-on skill, but it’s really important in this day and age where they’re bombarded with information.

Caring for animals – at least the basics of how to approach them, how to pet them properly as to not aggravate them.

Caring for children – so they are a good parent. Changing a diaper, how to hold them.

How to sterilize water and perhaps even collect rainwater.

How to read the time from a non-digital clock, and perhaps even learn to use/make a sundial.

How to save money, or at least understand the value of it – how much it takes to get it and how to determine the value of something they buy when it comes to bigger items.

Self-defense – how to protect yourself enough to get away from someone.

How to put the chain back on their bike and how to put air in the tires.

How to use a condom, contraceptives and the dangers/horrors of STD’s. (Once old enough) and how pregnancy can happen.

How to change a light bulb. (I’m still amazed that people can’t figure this out sometimes.)

How to tear off a piece of duct tape without it sticking on itself.

How to find help if lost somewhere.

How to fix the toilet when it’s running.

How to shut off the water and the power in the house if needed. (Obviously meant for an older child.)

How to wrap a present. Okay that’s a lame one, but sometimes it comes in handy! haha

How to respond in a fire/emergency – such as locating exits when they are in a room etc. When NOT to use water on a fire, and how to use a fire extinguisher.

How to ask for help when they need it. Not a hands-on thing, but some people just can’t figure this one out. Everyone needs help at some point.

How to type on a keyboard and SPELL correctly. Typing is a really useful skill in this day and age!

How to respect themselves and others. This includes saying NO to things asked of them, and remembering that other people are entitled to their opinions.

How to work a lighter (when they are old enough!!!) and how to respect fire.

How to take their temperature and determine their heart rate.

How to lift heavy things properly.

How to stop, drop and roll!

How to use a plunger to unclog a toilet.

How to climb a ladder and use one properly. (Some people don’t get this either – it amazes me.)

I’d want my daughter to know how to do all those things, except maybe changing fluids in the car- as long as there is Jiffy Lube that one should be covered. I can do all of those things except that one.
