Autism Causes Symptoms Information With Treatment

Autism (say: aw -tih-zum) causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. Kids who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can’t communicate without special help. Although treatment has improved greatly in the past few decades, autism cannot be cured. It’s estimated that three to six of every 1,000 children have autism. It persists throughout life. Some believe this increase is largely due to changed diagnostic criteria and/or societal factors, while others think the reason is environmental. Although the specific causes of autism are unknown, there is a large database of links between autism and genetic loci that span every chromosome. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Some autistic children and adults are opposed to attempts to cure autism, because they see autism as part of who they are, and in some cases they perceive attempts of a cure to be intensive and unnatural.

Symptoms of Autism

Some Symptoms of Autism :

Avoids cuddling or making eye contact.

Doesn’t respond to voices or other sounds.

Injures himself or herself or is unafraid of danger.

Has a flat facial expression or uses a monotone voice.

Doesn’t understand hand gestures or body language.

Is very concerned with order, routine or ritual.

Treatment of Autism

Therapists use highly structured and intensive skill-oriented training sessions to help children develop social and language skills. Family counseling for the parents and siblings of children with autism often helps families cope with the particular challenges of living with an autistic child.

Doctors often prescribe an antidepressant medication to handle symptoms of anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Anti-psychotic medications are used to treat severe behavioral problems. Seizures can be treated with one or more of the anticonvulsant drugs.

There are a number of controversial therapies or interventions available for autistic children, but few, if any, are supported by scientific studies. Parents should use caution before adopting any of these treatments.

Question by Diana: What are causes of Autism and Asperger’s syndrome?
What are probable causes of Autism and Asperger’s syndrome and do these conditions change an individuals ability to speak and think?

Best answer:

Answer by special ed mom
As of date there is no official “cause” of Autism or Asperger’s syndrome. At first, I thought that it was inherited, but that’s only part of a possible influence. There are numerous websites about Autism, just Google it. But it all comes down to a combination of factors that when they “show” or are present at the same time, impair the brain’s cells’ ability to properly communicate socially and are unaware of the subtleties of human behavior, like gestures, facial expressions and indirect hints. The cells may either miss-fire or cease to function altogether.

Some of the ideas that parents have found to improve the syndrome (or condition) are diet, environment, behavior modification, and pharmaceutical regimens. Some kids respond well to a non-dairy diet, others respond well to a Celiac’s diet (gluten free). Then, there’s the fun of trying to find the perfect combination of ideas. Above all, patience is the best measure, along with a support group, like the Awesome Society and Autism Speaks.

There’s a lot of evidence for a strong genetic basis, but nobody knows the specifics yet. Autism is a very complex disorder that varies a lot among individuals; all we know is that it involves many interactions in many different genes, and it’ll be a while before anyone determines precisely what’s going on genetically. Some people believe that environmental factors cause, contribute to, or trigger autism. A fortunately small group of people still believes in the now-debunked MMR theory, too.

Autistic people typically have delayed speech, and about 15% are permanently nonverbal. People with Asperger’s have fairly normal speech development and good verbal skills, but may speak in a way that’s overly formal or pedantic. And what we like to talk about is very different, that’s for sure. As for thought, autism spectrum disorders certainly affect the way we think, but it’s hard to say how. Nobody really knows how anyone else thinks.

Nobody knows for sure what causes autism and Asperger’s syndrome. They are believed to be at least partly genetic, but it is possible that environmental factors come into it as well. More research needs to be done to find out for sure though exactly what causes them.

A lot of people think/claim that they are caused by vaccinations, but that theory has been debunked and the research that claimed that there is a link between vaccinations and autism/Asperger’s has been proven to have major flaws and the researchers are believed to have cheated to affect the results. That research is not considered credible anymore, but you may still hear rumors about vaccinations being the cause, but that’s incorrect.

Autism and Asperger’s syndrome affect the way people think and communicate. People with autism and Asperger’s syndrome are differently wired than other people and think and function differently than most people.

People with autism have speech delay, but it varies in severity between individuals and can be anything from just a minor delay to the person being completely nonverbal. People with Asperger’s syndrome don’t have a speech delay, but their choice of words and way of speaking often tends to be unusually formal. People with autism and Asperger’s syndrome have difficulties with non-verbal communication, such as body language, facial expressions, tone of voice and such.

People with autism and Asperger’s syndrome have limited social skills and have difficulties with social interactions.
