The Roles of Research And Statistics in Organizational Psychology

Research and statistics play a huge role in organizational psychology research. There are an abundance of research tools and means of accumulating and determining statistics in organizational psychology. This article will discuss the roles of research and statistics in organizational psychology.

Research and statistics play a large role in the studies of organizational psychology. There are many methods of research and statistics used to determine information and answers to the many questions posed by organizational psychologists. When collecting data, researchers must be aware of several issues that can affect the validity of their research. Generalizing information across differing organizations can commonly lead to mistakes (Britt & Jex, 2008). Research methods vary and should be used to suit the questions at hand.

Many research methods exist in organizational psychology. Archival data, a method of organizational psychology research, represents “any form of data or other records that are compiled for purposes that are independent of the research being conducted;” the common use of this form of research stems from its abundance (Britt & Jex, 2008, Ch. 2). Survey methods are popular means of research in organizational psychology along with observational studies. These common means of research help researchers determine information about employees in a business setting.

Statistics reflect important parts of organizational research; they also help researchers determine variables to base their data analysis and means of measuring information gathered. Descriptive statistics use the mean of information to determine central tendencies and dispersion; to calculate the mean all answers are added up and divided by the total number of answer to gather an average (Britt & Jex, 2008). Meta-analysis has become recently popular in organizational psychology, and it “involves the quantitative summary of research findings and is typically used in research domains where a considerable number of studies have been conducted” (Britt & Jex, 2008, Ch. 2). Statistics play an important role in organizational psychology research, but these methods have issues that must be considered. Statistical power reflects the strength of statistical information based on several factors such as sampling size and effect size (Britt & Jex, 2008). Research and statistics play a key role in organizational psychology, and they must be used correctly to present valid results and information.

Research and statistics are a key component in organizational psychology, and they are used to determine and analyze data. These tools are used to greatly increase the effectiveness and success of an organization.

Question by Jane: How important is knowledge of statistics to a career as a psychologist?
Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my third year of my undergraduate psychology degree, and am one day hoping to qualify as either a clinical children’s psychologist or a health psychologist.

I’ve been coping okay with the statistics up until this point, but am beginning to struggle – it’s getting tough!

Obviously, I need to pass my statistics exams to gain my degree, but, I ask, how important is knowledge of statistics and abilities in statistics to a career as a psychologist? Would I be able to survive as a psychologist without being particularly good at statistics?

Thank you!

No, you must be very good at statistics because most medical and psychological deductions are based on statistics. If you can’t handle statistics, get out of the psychologist field.

edit: Most likely only the bozos that squeaked and cheated their way through psychologist training downthumbed me. However, if you are any good in the field, you study research papers on clinical trials, etc. These studies ALL use scientific methodology, which is mainly statistics, for hypothesis testing, and to create discussion and make conclusions.

Answering Criminology Research Questions

In some instances, the professors of the classes will enable the students to come up with a thesis of their own.  This allows more flexibility on the part of the student, since they are able to define for themselves what they want to discuss and what they want to leave out of their research.  As long as the research that is left out is not critical to the thesis, this is typically allowed.  However, in many cases the professors will not give the students this option.  Instead, the professor will supply the students with a question, or a list of questions from which the student can choose the one that they would most like to turn into a term or research paper.  The difference between these two scenarios is that the individual student needs to be sure that when they are doing a paper that has been assigned to them that they fully answer the research question posed to them.  If this is not accomplished, it is very likely that the student will not be able to get as competitive of a grade as they would otherwise have been entitled to.  This is why it is so important to fully tackle the research question.

When it comes to successfully answering posed questions with the greatest amount of success, students need to do their research.  For many people, it is beneficial to use the internet as a source of information.  Students need to be careful with this approach when they are trying to answer research questions for a grade.  There are many different websites on the internet, and not all of them are reputable.  Instead, students need to get their information for other places, or at least in addition to information found on the internet.

There are a number of different journals that are reputable and legitimate.  Easily found in many libraries, the Canadian Journal of Criminology and the British Journal of Criminology are two of the most successful available resources.  Both feature articles and information that comes from all different areas of the world and different academics.  Many schools will also have Criminology databases that can be accessed by students and this too provides a valuable tool during the research phase of a students Criminology paper.  The database includes journals, articles and periodicals that are popular within the world of Criminology.  Searching is very important for students to accomplish properly and it is important that they not give up before the research is completed.  Not only can this affect their grade, but it will not accurately show the capabilities of the students.  In order to successfully answer research questions that are posed to students by professors and teachers, students need to come up with a well defined thesis that can be supported by different theories and ideas that are or have been expressed within the Criminology arena.  Many professors are looking for new and expansive ideas, so this does not mean that the student needs to recycle material.  Rather, they need to draw on the work of individuals that have come before them and use the knowledge of the past to help promote their new ideas and concepts.
